There was nothing about her that would command our attention, just a little girl running around in the dusty trails of the desert. She was ordinary in every sense, nothing particularly set her apart, not her color, hair or any other striking feature. As the years went by she settled gracefully into womanhood and probably became the discussion of the eligible bachelors. Finally, one of them gathered enough courage to make a move and succeeded in getting a “yes, I will marry you”. At this time, the family is excited and planning vigorously for the wedding. The elders have been informed, the chettubah is being written and the Kolin proudly executes his daily duties of carrying messages back and forth between the couple. Everything seemed to go as planned until one day an angel appeared to her with the most unusual salutation. “Hail Mary, full grace, thou art highly favored amongst women”.
All kinds of thoughts must have raced down her mind: I didn’t think much of myself except as a young woman whose time has come to be given in marriage. I am not of the family of prophets or the lineage of kings. I haven’t done anything like Esther or those Hebrew midwives. I haven’t prevailed in prayer like Hannah or risked my life like any of the wise woman in Israel. Why do you salute me so gallantly? What have I done to deserve this favor? Highly favored amongst women? how could that be? Before the thoughts could settle the angel announced another shocking news. “ You shall be with child of the Holy Spirit”. Wow, Mr. angel hold on; what kind of a blessing is this? are you aware that to be found with a child at this time means death?” How can you call this a blessing? Over and over again She debates the issue in her head, unable to make any sense of it.
It is at this time that Mary makes the most remarkable statement; “let it be unto me according to thy word”. It is as though she was saying I don’t understand this blessing, it defies logic and looks very suspicious nevertheless I am willing to take it. In the following months this young maiden is subjected to all manner of humiliation and vicious insinuations from neighbors because of this so called blessing. Here is a blessed woman yet on the run for her life. It would makes sense that in her quite moments she will whisper her confusion and perplexity to God; “You said you will bless me, what is this?”
In Genesis chapter 12 verses 1 to 3, God appeared to Abraham and blessed him with what we can rightly term the father of all blessings. A great nation would come out of him, his name will be great and he will be a blessing to many. The journey begun with very little direction but he was fully covered by God’s global positioning system (GPS). The best way he could have explained this to his family was; guys, God just spoke to me and we are going to make it big. Pack your bags, we are leaving this place, its pay day. Just further down south between Bethel and Hai, Abraham is confronted with hunger. Hey God, you said you will bless me what is this? Then comes the Pharaoh who now wants his wife; Oh no, wait a minute, this is supposed to be a blessed life, you didn’t say anything about losing my wife. no nothing about the family breaking up and Lot leaving? Finally in Chapter 15 of Genesis he gathers courage to ask God; I remember you saying a great nation was going to come out of me, I was going to be great and a blessing. I have seen the cattle, and the servants but I am old and still don’t have a son. In other words you said you will bless me, what is this?
The young Joseph wakes up from sleep rushing to his father to tell him of his dream. He is excited even though his youthful mind couldn’t comprehend it completely he knows it must be something good. It all started well with his coat of many colors until he finds himself a slave far from home. As he leans against the prison walls he asks under his breadth, what were all those dreams for? In other words you said you will bless me what is this? I had my hopes up when I got the opportunity to explain the dreams of the cup bearer and the butler, but it’s been 3 years and nothing has become of it? Oh lord, you said you will bless me what is this? The widow of Zarephath wondered at Elijah’s demands. If God has sent you to solve my problem then why don’t you just go ahead and do that. You are asking me to give you the little I have left before he blesses me?, what is this?.
God has said he will bless you. You are to possess the gates of your enemies. No evil can come near your dwelling place, you and your children will never beg for bread. All these things he has said to you yet everything seem to go in the opposite direction. He said he will bless you, what is this?
IT IS JUST A PATTERN. He will always require a seed of some sort. Yes, it hurts now and will continue to hurt for a while but in the end it will all be worth it. Like all the people we discussed earlier hold on because the end will not forever elude you. You will soon find out that God is not a man that He should lie and that He watches over His word to perform it. IT IS JUST A PATTERN SO DON’T PANIC. IT SHALL BE WELL.
